Something that has dramatically changed my outlook on life has been magic, I know I know, sounds crazy right? But hear me out.
Instead of doing what ‘normal’ people do and work through my trauma by exercising and going to therapy I decided to pick up a deck of tarot cards. I mean what’s more fun, running or being a witch? As a complete cynic (at first) I started using the cards just as a way to reflect, reading a few cards at a time when pondering a question or looking for direction. It was my little bit of time to be mindful and work through my thoughts. Did I think that the cards could tell me my future or possessed real magic? No, but I did believe that pulling cards helped me to be more mindful.
I started out by reading my cards on a Sunday night, asking them what I needed to know for the week ahead. The generic meanings of each card meant that I used my own intuition to interpret them in a way that felt right for me. Before I knew it I was making a little Sunday evening routine of it that included an everything bubble bath, candles, fresh pyjamas and meditation. This little injection of magic set me on my wellbeing journey of living slowly and leaning into what I need and want rather than what everyone else makes you believe you need and want.
Fast forward to the present and my favourite thing about magic and spirituality is the little rituals you adopt. I journal my intentions with the new moon and write things I want to be free from on scraps of paper which I burn. I stir intention into my coffee, I put out into the universe what I want to receive and I try to live cyclically (leaning in to the seasons of the world and my body). What I have discovered most on this journey is that there are so many people who crave a bit of magic too.
Since opening up more and more about my spirituality I have managed to bring together a small group of women who all love magic or at least love the idea of magic. Every new moon and full moon we meet up, we create a circle, we perform a ritual (no, we don’t dance around naked), we journal and then we talk. I marketed it to people as a wellbeing group, you don’t have to believe in anything or even be open to anything, you just have to be open to spending two hours working on yourself. A bit like how you’d work on your fitness at a gym class but this is for your mental wellbeing and has candles and incense and oracle cards and just generally good vibes.
So if you’re interested in injecting a little magic into your life, here is a little ritual just for you (you could even perform it on Monday, the next Full Moon)
Firstly, you’ll want to get your journal and a pen. If you already have some witchy bits such as oracle cards or a tarot deck grab those too.
Take some time to create a calm space, light some candles, play some gentle music, get cosy with a blanket.
Spend some time with your journal thinking about what isn’t serving you and what you want to get rid of (the full moon is a time to release things). It could be negative thoughts, barriers or people. Use the following prompts to help -
What do I want to achieve?
What is stopping me from achieving this?
How can I overcome the things that are stopping me?
If you struggle to journal it can be helpful to set a timer and sit with the prompt for a period of time to stop yourself from skipping difficult thoughts and ideas.
Now it’s time to pull a card, oracle or tarot - if you don’t have any then I highly recommend the Mystic Monday’s app which allows you to pull one tarot card a day.
Again, journal what this card means to you, use the generic descriptions to help you deepen your thoughts in your journal.
Finally, write down all the things stopping you from achieving and release them into the universe by burning them or tearing them up.
Even if you don’t believe in magic, this little act of self-care will leave you feeling lighter and more in touch with yourself. There is no better magic than that!
